God (and Satan) in the media
“My brothers and sisters, we need to understand that in every home the devil is at work to create strife. When the couple prays, they are inviting God to use His powerful hand to conquer the devil.” – Pastor Bryson Katele, Sunday Times of Zambia, April 27, 2014.
Doubting Thomas’ comment: These are hallucinations typical of people stuck in the superstitious past.
“I have a lot to thank God for because I have been inspired by what He has taught us as human beings.” – Dr Kenneth Kaunda, reflecting on his 90th birthday, The Post, April 28, 2014.
Doubting Thomas’ comment: What exactly has God taught us? Peace, love and unity? It is Zambians, as human beings, that have voluntarily chosen these things instead of war and division. These are the people that should be thanked, not a fictitious supernatural character.
“The definition of life is not cultural or medical but godly (of the Creator). The journey of life is crystal clear in the Bible and does not invite debate; life begins at conception.” – Concerned opposing abortion, Postbag, April 25, 2014.
Doubting Thomas’ comment: This fundamentalist view is ignorant of the scientific fact that aborted embryos are not yet human beings; they are little clusters of cells without a nervous system.
“We can only thank our Heavenly Father for giving us this great son of Africa. But above all, we are grateful that the good Lord allowed Dennis (Liwewe) to see Zambia lift the Africa Cup of Nations.” – Kampa Senkwe, Readers’ Forum, Zambia Daily Mail, April 25, 2014.
Doubting Thomas’ comment: Taken seriously, this comment implies that God spared Liwewe’s life only because Zambia had not yet won the Africa Cup. After Zambia achieved this, God decided to terminate Liwewe’s life. Fatuous!
